Insert HEA here.

Posted by: Jessa Slade
Currently working on: Revisions to SEDUCED BY SHADOWS & first draft of FORGED OF SHADOWS
Mood: Frazzled (not by the revisions)

First, for my off-topic frazzlement. Please, if you own a pet, microchip it. Now I'm as paranoid about clandestine quasi-governmental conspiracies as the next person, but please please PLEASE, a microchipped pet is the one time that being identified and tracked can only have a good outcome.

I am currently providing a home for the lovely injured border collie/Aussie pup pictured here. My sweetie picked him up after he was hit by a car Friday morning. No tags. No microchip. No response to all our ads.

What will happen to this charming boy? Many of these stories don't end well. Should your pet go astray, you'll have a better chance of a happy ending if YOU CAN BE FOUND. He's not lost anymore, but his owners are :(

End rant.

Speaking of rants, how 'bout those blogs? Topics for everyone. And no one. How egalitarian. Here are a few of my favorites:

For the writers out there, A Newbie's Guide to Publishing from J.A. Konrath offers all sorts of intriguing advice on the mechanics of being published. Some will be happy to hear he doesn't hold with that pesky theory about writing every day.

For readers who love paranormals, Fangs Fur & Fey is a great place to hang out. The writers are amazing and fun. And their stories are better yet.

In a bit of shameless self-promotion, I will also recommend Silk And Shadows, the new blog by... me! Me and four other new dark paranormal authors, that is. We're still in the development stages, but we hope to take the world by storm by mid October so check back.

And don't forget to microchip your pets. And pester your friends and family to do it too. Heck, you could always post the reminder on your blog.

NAME: Genene Valleau
CURRENTLY WORKING ON: Just finished line edits for my February 2009 release
MOOD: Loving the autumn sunshine!

My name is Genene Valleau and I'm not a Big Blogger.

Well, except for a nip -- I mean, a morning peek or two at chapter blogs, I rarely imbibe in blogs. Because, let's face it: blogs can be addictive. Just the blogs recommended by previous bloggers this month are a sore temptation to spend endless hours perched in front of the computer sampling one blog concoction after another. The mere idea of such a blog binge intoxicates me. However, my family, friends and creditors would be sorely unhappy if I took that wicked path.

Joking aside, I am amazed at the number of blogs available and the myriad of topics they cover. However, other than a page of "Thoughts and Meanderings" on my Web site that gets rare updates, I only blog once a month on our RCRW blog and twice a month on the Mid-Willamette Valley RWA blog with an occasional guest blog elsewhere.

Witty writing repartee is not one of my strong points. So I am not going to inundate you with recommended blog sites. Instead, I would invite you to sample one or two of the blogs recommended earlier in the month, then go out and enjoy the autumn sunshine!

P.S. And come visit my Web site for monthly contests and upcoming releases when you have time!

Blog upon blog upon blog

Posted by: Lisa Hendrix
Currently Writing: IMMORTAL OUTLAW
Mood: Frantic

This month finds me in a major deadline frap (FRAP=Frenetic Random Activity Period, usually applied to the daily period when your puppy--or your child--runs around the house like a demon has suddenly possessed her, here applied to my approach to writing), so I'm going to simultaneously flake out and give you a link to the best damned list of book blogs in the known universe, thanks to Book Blogger Appreciation Week.  They're not all romance blogs, nor have they been checked for quality, but there are hundreds of them, in alphabetical order.  Dive in HERE.

And I'll see you next month, with more to say and (I hope) more time to say it.

Navigating the Blogosphere

Posted by Maggie Jaimeson
Currently working on: starting a new novel that may have multiple book possibilities
Mood: excited to be starting a new book, dead tired as I madly prepare for the beginning of students coming back to the university

When blogs first appeared on the Internet they were primarily written by computer geeks. Let's face it, no one else knew they existed. Soon, they were used as a platform for political pundits. Now they've become an entirely new way of publishing--a way that anyone can use to publish their ideas, thoughts, feelings. In the romance blogosphere my loyalties are divided in three ways: writer friends who blog; agents/editors who blog; and general industry blogs (networking sites in the blogging world).

I read friends and other writers blogs because I truly love to get a piece of their musings, whether its a funny day with their kids or describing their overall journey. Writers are amazing people who almost always think outside the box. Two favorite blogs in this category that are at opposite ends of the spectrum are: Jenna Bayley-Burke's Romantic Notions and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Jenna's site is big, bouncy, sometimes brash but always fun whether she's sharing her latest book signings or talking about a trip with her family. It makes me smile and often laugh out loud. Kris' site is much more serious. She talks a lot about the business and how to improve. I read her because she's published over 100 books and probably a thousand short stories. She publishes in mystery, SF, and romance, and was an editor for Fantasy & Science Fiction and for Pulphouse. It's kind of like that commercial about Merrily Lynch. When Kris' talks, I listen.

It seems that most writers read at least one or two agent/editor blogs. This is a great connection to the publishing side of writing. You can get a good feel for personalities, what they like to see come across their desk, and their guesses at trends. I don't read these blogs as often because you can become far too addicted to every thing they say. But I have days when all I do is catch up on all the agent/editor blogs I follow--immersing myself in the business. Two of my favorites in this category are: The Bookends Blog and Edit Torrent. The Bookends Blog is usually written by Jessica Faust though other agents and some of their authors blog on occasion. Jessica has a way of making everything about agenting clear and not beating around the bush regarding what works and what doesn't. I've met her a couple of times at conferences and always liked her down-to-earth style. Edit Torrent is written by two editors. If you like the minutia of editors work you'll like this blog. They get down to arguing about comma placement, phrasing, and word choices and order. Sometimes I read this just to remind me how I always have more to learn about craft.

Finally, the industry networking blogs are my second favorite category (next to my friends). This is because these blogs are usually written by groups of people or they show the work of writers in a really nice promotional format. My favorite in this category is called The First Book. It was started by an acquaintance of mine when he had just sold his first book. He was so excited about the experience and wondering how to get it promoted among the thousands of books that come out each year (it's not due out until 2010). So, he started this site where he features someone's "First Book" through an author interview and a HUGE cover insert. I love reading these because that first sale is so full of energy that you can just feel it in the author's responses and get a feeling for their excitement and commitment. I also love reading this because it introduces me to books and author's I'd probably never find otherwise. They aren't all romances. The books are in a variety of genres.

Finally, my overall blog pick for romance is Romancing the Blog. With a name like that how can you go wrong? It's written by a huge list of authors and you never know what the topic will be, but it's always interesting. The authors flit from front page news and opinions to marriage counseling and talking about the heroes and heroines. It's wonderful. So, enjoy blogging or better yet reading blogs.

My favorite blogs

Currently: Finishing up my three book proposal which I will be sending out next Saturday.
Mood: Exhausted beyond belief... Need. Sleep.

I must say when it comes to blogs, the above picture pretty much sums it up, doesn't it? Everyone (myself included) wants everyone to read their blog. It's like a bloody popularity contest. And it is. Everyone is trying to pimp their blog and of course, if you're a writer, yourself. So with all the blogs out there, which ones do *I* flock to? The ones that give me what I want most: history. My time is precious (and yet...ehm). Time not spent writing or reading or researching needs to be spent wisely (or so I keep telling myself as I wander the Internet endlessly). And blogs can be hit or miss. Some are wonderful but chatty (not that there is anything wrong with chatty, mind you) and some blogs hit on about anything and everything so you never know what you're going to stumble upon when you visit. I guess I like to know what I'm getting each and every time whenever I go to a blog. And so again, for me, I would say it's history. So here's my little list of favorite blogs (I have much, much more, but I'm trying to keep things simple and this post short as I am under deadline. Ack!):
*History Undressed
*Women of History
*World History Blog
Oh and then there's my blog, A Bit O'Muslin. Heh.
Cheers and much love until next time,
Delilah Marvelle

Bumpin' Around In the Night

No, I wasn't procrastinating, nothing like that. I had a perfectly good reason to be plowing through my bookcase a few weeks ago. A new couch was about to be moved into my office and to do so, said bookcase had to be moved. So then I decided to weed through some of the old stuff and in order to make sure I didn't want to keep certain writing research books, I had to skim them.
Okay, now that hopefully you're all buying into this essential activity, what I wound up holding onto last was a ten year old book on how to write horror. I write erotica. I used to write category romances and Native American historicals, not horror. But--confession time--I'd love to give horror a whirl. Unfortunately, my last name's not King or Koontz and reality said, "Vonna, there ain't a chance in you know what that you'll get horror published." So why am I holding onto the book?
Because tapping into my characters' fears is an incredibly exciting way of getting down to their essence.
Okay, let me think about that for a moment. A new idea is perculating and when sleep wouldn't come last night, I asked what my still-growing hero and heroine's greatest fears are. For the heroine, its going to be being lost. As a child, she was left alone (not sure how that came about) in the middle of a forest. As a result, she struggled to get past that trauma by becoming intimately familiar with the wilderness. This will tie into the hero's need for her. Of course she's not about to reveal that old fear to this powerful man who is forcing her to guide him against her will. Ah, I'm getting a chill just thinking about what happens between the two of them when what she believes is her greatest weakness is revealed.
So what about our fearless hero who right now has a lot of Konan the Barbarian in him. You know the type, bred and trained to risk his life in service to his king. Whatever's required of him, he'll do it in service to the man he considers a god. He's not afraid of death, considers it a badge of honor to die in service to his country. (Hey, he was brainwashed, ain't his fault). What he does fear is helplessness. What if he can't fight? What purpose does his existence have?
My still-birthing characters aren't afraid of monsters who come out at night, snakes, lightning storms, etc, etc. No, their personal horrors are much closer to the heart. And those vulnerabilities are what, eventually, hopefully, will bring them together.
As for me, probably the thing I'd be the most afraid of is cave exploring. Going into the dark to who knows where with what crawling around? Not gonna happen!!!!!!
Okay, gentle readers. What bumps around you in the middle of the night?

Blegging By Suzanne Macpherson

Suzanne is ~~writing something completely different and amazing.
Mood~~ Indigo for Imagination and Chinese Red for Lucky Days

I invented a new word~~ blegging. Definition: Begging your friends to visit your blogs. It's actually coming in handy.

My pal Jenny Gardiner spent her year on The Debutante Ball, a super blog spot, and it got so she didn't have to Bleg anyone to visit. A new group of Deb's has taken over and she's moved on to Channeling Erma, where I joined her, being an Erma Bombeck Devotee. We are a group of moms who also write, share stories about our kids, and laugh at life, much like Erma.

I think its very interesting to watch the development of blog concepts, who they attract, and how they do or don't survive. I've got a blog I've rarely used but lately have been trying to update. As I wrote on Blondie Blogs one day, when it comes to personal blogs its not about the mindmushing details of life, its a slice of the adventure, a thought run wild, an article in the making. We have these little minutes of the day. How about we make them amazing and uplifting! The line from A League of Their Own comes to mind. "No Crying in Baseball!"

That said, I'm on the search for some out of the ordinary blogs, and here's one I found: The Writer's Journey, which is a blog by a freelance writer I can't seem to identify. He/She has some great links to other sites
And no I don't think its Chris Vogler's blog. But do read the article -
Wash That Blank Right Out of Your Screen

I stumbled across Nathan Bransford's blog which is a gem of information and his adventures as a literary agent. It's a must. Nathan attended the SF RWA convention this summer and came away a wiser man. He is based in California.

That's more than anyone should be doing on a computer, so fold this away in your fun file and have at it when you are tempted to play online tic tac toe instead of learn or laugh.

Blogs?

Currently: Putting together a proposal for a western
Mood: Always busy

I have to admit that I'm not much of a blog reader. I have one on MySpace that I don't visit very often. But there are LOADS of them out there and I think they're a wonderful concept. There's something for everyone, and it's so democratic--anyone can do it. Check out the rest of the posts here--I know we have authors who've got great resources to suggest!

Favorite Blogs

Currently: Finishing up a submission and planning the next book. Working on workshops for Emerald City.

Mood: Overstimulated. Again. Throwing a birthday BBQ tomorrow...

I don't find much time to read blogs right now, but I am a participant in one other blog. This one has a different erotic romance author posting for every day of the month, so take a look if you like erotic romance.

Back when I had time to read blogs, this one was consistently my favorite: And truly, there are so many links off this one that you can find just about anything to suit you from this link alone.

In terms of agent blogs, this is the first one I'm likely to go to:

In other news, I'm now a part of two workshops at Emerald City next month. One as part of a group and one I'm giving on my own. If anyone has any information about authors who've been rejected by Harlequin/Silhouette and has gone on to sell those manuscripts elsewhere, please get in touch! I hope to see you at the conference, where I'll be celebrating the release of Cherokee's Playmates (by Anh Leod, at Ellora's Cave) on October 10th.

Favorite Romance Blog

Posted by Terri Reed
Currently working on getting some proposals out the door
Mood: peaceful and a bit tired from long weekend spent hiking and horseback riding in the wilds of Eastern Oregon at Wallowa Lake.

My favorite romance blog would be CRAFTIE Ladies of Suspense blogspot at http://ladiesofsuspense.blogspot.com/
Yes, I will proudly say I'm a poster on this blog. There are seven Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense authors on the blog. We each take a day of the week to post. We also have a monthly contest to win the Four Love Inspired Books for the month. My day to post is Tuesdays and I post an interview each week that I do for the month's current Love Inspired Suspense books. My interview is a bit different in that I interview the hero or heroine (authors choice) of said book. Its a great way to get to know the characters which makes them even more 'alive' when reading the book. These interviews are now also being posted on the offical eharlequin site in the Steeple Hill blog, as well as the other internet places that Steeple Hill has a presence such as FACEBOOK, My Space, Shout Life and Shelfari. This has been a great way to cross promote all of the Love Inspired Suspense books.
Stop on by and visit us, leave a comment and you'll be entered into the drawing for the Four Love Inspired Books for the month.

Bling-blang-blog

Posted by: Karen Duvall
Currently Working On:
A steampunk urban fantasy novel that’s the first in a new series and is called Mystic Taxi (love this title! I pray I get to keep it).

Mood:
Stressed out because I still haven't finished the PowerPoint presentation for a writers' workshop I'll be giving in Denver next week. Aargh!

The topic this month is favorite romance blogs, but I'm sad to say I don't really have any. Not romance blogs, anyway. But I admit to being a blog-a-holic. Ahem.

The Internet is all about information, and when it comes to blogs you get the best of two worlds: info and personality. Every blog you read conveys the personality of the blogger. It can't be helped. It's like reading someone's diary.

I really enjoy group blogs, like our Rose City Romance Writers, where you get to read viewpoints from a variety of bloggers and not just one. I like Witchy Chicks, Magical Musings, Fangs, Fur & Fey, The League of Extraordinary Adults, and of course, the ultra-fabulous Mid Willamette Valley chapter blog . This last one is the best. You must visit.

I'm especially fond of several agent blogs, if they're not overly promotional, because they highlight the literary agent's part in the industry. I have an agent, but the dear woman doesn't blog, so I have to fulfill my needs elsewhere. I absolutely love Janet Reid's blog because she's so damn honest and tells it like it is. Rumor has it she's the original Miss Snark. For reals!

I've made Bookends and Pub Rants a daily habit. There are more, but you can visit just about any agent blog and see all the other agent blog links listed on the side.

For romance news and real gossip starters, you can't go wrong with Smart Bitches Read Trashy Books.

As for individual blogs, I'm partial to Lynn Viehl and I get such a kick out of Jackson Pearse. Jackson is a twenty-four-year-old writer who's amazingly talented and reminds me a bit of my youngest daughter. And she's hysterically funny; her life is like a sitcom. Jackson writes young adult and just got a contract for her first YA fantasy novel that was sold at auction. She's now buying her first condo. I adore success stories.

My two favorite industry blogs are Writer Unboxed and Writer Beware. The former because of the fabulous author, agent and editor interviews, and the latter for keeping writers up-to-date on scammers. What would we ever do without Victoria Straus and Ann Crispin? They are true life heroes for the writer community.

Okay, just by writing this post I've spent a few hours getting caught up in reading the blogs I made links to. Sigh. That's the danger of the Interenet. It can often be too tempting and too interesting to ignore. Happy surfing!

Favorite Romance Blogs?

Posted by: Susan Lute
Currently Working On: Short contemporary romance revisions, and the initial phase of a single title contemporary romance, getting non-fiction book ready to send to agent.
Mood: Feeling pretty darn good.

I would love to say something clever and post a cool picture or two (you'll also notice I'm link challenged), but the truth is, discussing my favorite romance blogs is a bit of a sticky wicket for me. You see, I don’t often visit many blogs. For me, it’s a time management issue. I either get to spend time on the internet, or time writing :)

That being said, it turns out this blog, is my favorite. I laugh often, learn new things, get to catch up with my fellow authors. I also really like Delilah Marvelle’s blog, http://www.delilahmarvelle.blogspot.com/. She only posts twice a month; good planning I’d say from a time management point of view, and I love her historical references. I’ve visited Jane Porter’s blog, http://www.janeporter.com/janeblog/. She’s always interesting. Look where her writing has taken her. ODD MOM OUT is being made into a movie in which she has a cameo role. Very cool. I have on occasion been known to visit agent Jessica Foust’s blog, http://bookendslitagency.blogspot.com/. There’s a woman who knows her industry. And, if you catch the Knight Agency blog, http://knightagency.blogspot.com/, during the Sundance Film Festival, some exciting stuff goes on there.

So, though I’d love to say, I'm a blog slut, it’s probably better that I just keep writing. On my own website www.susanlute.com, I call it “Let’s talk”. Less formal than a blog, and if I post only once or twice a month, you’ll know it’s because I’ve had my nose buried in my current manuscript.

Until next month, chiao!

Mistress of Pleasure is finally here! A writer's journey into the bookstore

Today is the official release date of my first historical romance, MISTRESS OF PLEASURE, and I have to say that it is finally sinking in. I actually sold a book. Gah! After trying to sell for close to 11 years, having written over 40 manuscripts and having collected over 200 rejection letters (one from my own editor...LOL), I have to say I thought this day would never come.

Then yesterday, while I was in Bend during my Labor day weekend getaway, I popped into the local Barnes and Noble. And holy bloody cow! There was my book. On the shelf! Only...eh...it wasn't so gloriously displayed as you see here. This here is the AFTER photo.

My book was actually on the very bottom shelf, hidden away from sight and light. I know it's naughty, people, but COME ON. LOL. Anyway, I dug the poor thing out and was surprised to find there was only one. When they had earlier told me they had five. Hm. And what was worse, the loner was improperly alphabetized. So I was on the bottom because of a mistake, when in fact, I should have been on top (naturally). So I walked over to the customer service desk, introduced myself and politely asked, "Where are the rest of my books?" The gal and I spent the next 15 minutes hunting for a needle in a haystack. Quite literally. The gal was amazingly lovely throughout the whole hunt and kept repeating, "It should be here somewhere." Which was reassuring. We eventually found them (yay!). It wasn't that I my book was naughty (although...), the rest of my stash simply hadn't been shelved and were still sitting in the back awaiting attention. Fortunately, I had come into the store or who knows what sad fate those poor things would have met... The exciting part, in the end (aside from seeing my book and holding it while standing in a bookstore) was not only being able to sign that stash of books and re-arrange them to receive the star treatment they truly deserved, but I found out that one of my books had already been put on reserve! Now THAT is what a writer's journey into a bookstore should be like.

Understanding the history of sex is not only important for historical accuracy, but also important from a creative standpoint. Delilah intends to touch upon everything from kissing, to courtship, from naughty word origins, rituals and the act itself from medieval times through today. All in an effort to not only help educate writers about “naughty” history, but lay out a wealth of fascinating resources that will enable them to further their research and in turn, expand their horizons not only for themselves, but for their characters.

A booksigning featuring RCRW authors will be held during intermission and feature titles from ::
