Using Short Stories to Market Yourself as a Writer

One might ask why it would benefit you to shift your focus away from novel writing to short story writing. The number one reason is marketing. This is one more way to promote your novels and brand, while honing your craft and learning to write succinctly. Sure, you can continue to write blog posts and articles in magazines and sources read by other writers, but stories are another way to reach your fans. Not only that, but you can make money and win contests doing so. Come to this workshop to find out what markets are out there, what magazines and anthologies are looking for, and how to find them.

As a child, Sarina Dorie dreamed of being an astronaut/archeologist/fashion designer/illustrator/writer. After years of dedication and hard work, most of Sarina’s dreams have come true; in addition to teaching art, she is a writer/artist/fashion designer/ belly dancer. She has taught English overseas in South Korea and in the JET program in Japan, and works as a copy editor and copy writer. She has shown her art internationally and sold illustrations to magazines. Sarina’s soon to be published novel, Silent Moon, won second place in the Duel on the Delta Contest, second place in the Golden Rose, third place in the Winter Rose Contest and third in the Ignite the Flame Contest. Her unpublished novel, Wrath of the Tooth Fairy won first place in the Golden Claddagh and in the Golden Rose contests. She has sold short stories to over thirty magazines and anthologies including Daily Science Fiction, Cosmos, Penumbra, Sword and Laser, Perihelion, Bards and Sages, Neo-Opsis, Flagship, Allasso, New Myths, Untied Shoelaces of the Mind, and Crossed Genres to name a few. www.sarinadorie.com

Now, if only Jack Sparrow asks her to marry him, all her dreams will come true.

There’s a fickle step between first draft and editor-ready manuscript where an author has to decide which ideas are golden and which are heavy as lead and need to be transmuted. It’s hard to kill your darling and much easier to throw the baby out with the bath water – cutting clichés comes later. This workshop takes a look at the mysterious realm of developmental editing, both working solo and with a flesh-and-blood editor – a place where ideas still matter. Anatomy of an Emotionally Escalating Romance

Presented by Linda Needham

One of the first rules we learn as romance writers is that the Emotional Conflict between the hero and heroine must not only be compelling enough to carry the relationship through the story, but that the Emotional Conflict must also escalate exponentially. Whaaaaa? Tough stuff, because if your reader fails to comprehend how the hero & heroine feel about the dangers that threaten the romance, the high-risk decisions they are forced to make, or the personal consequences of their individual actions, then your story will fail to incite the emotion necessary to sell your next book (which is the point, right?)

In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how to enrich your external plot with a powerfully escalating emotional journey guaranteed to provoke your readers with angst, arouse them with meaning and make them first-in-line readers for your next book and every book that follows.
After joining RWA and Portland’s Cascade Chapter in 1988, finaling in the Golden Heart in 1989, winning for Long Historical in 1995 and selling to Avon Books that same year, Linda considers herself a poster-girl for RWA. She currently writes full time from her home in the hills north of Hillsboro, OR, where she also writes plays and musicals, gardens, tap dances, spoils her two grandkids, takes extended research treks with her husband and blazes trails through their 5-acre woodland with their Portuguese Water Dog.
The Oregon Regency Society’s primary aim is to unite the groups and individuals dedicated to the appreciation of Jane Austen, Lord Byron, Beau Brummell, groups for English Country and Regency Dance, people that read and write Regency Romance, costumers specializing in Regency garments, and Historic reenactors and enthusiasts and so much more. We partake in events, workshops and educational opportunities to broaden our view of this all-too-short period in history. We celebrate the customs and costume of the time, and encourage all of our members to bring their own unique knowledge and skills to the table to share with others. www.orregency.org; orregency@msn.com
Maintain Pacing while Interweaving Historical, Factual, and Character Details in Fresh, Succinct Ways

Presented by Kristina McMorris

As readers, we've all been stalled at one time by a book's dreaded "info dump," ranging from characterization and backstory to factual research of various kinds. Through specific examples, this workshop will provide both practical and creative tips on how to craft, sift, and place such details without slowing a story's momentum. Also, learn what to do when faced by factual discoveries or common misconceptions that contradict even major elements of your work-in-progress. (After all, you don't always have to kill your darlings!)
Color them Grey: Anti-Heroes

Presented by Jessica Morrell

Fiction often proves just how complicated and troubled many people are and anti-heroes are the perfect type to do so. Anti-heroes are a story’s main character who is flawed, who can disturb us with his or her weaknesses, and make us think about the frailties of humanity. This workshop will describe the attributes and uses of anti-heroes and clarify how they are often used in fiction to depict reality and comment on social or political issues. An anti-hero is sometimes a maverick or screw-up, an outsider, a “little man,” underdog, misfit, or fool. They often occupy a grey area between good and evil. Anti-heroes can share some of the same qualities as villains (cynicism, brutality, ruthlessness, dishonesty) and sometimes have the soul, values, morals and values of hero. Examples from classic and contemporary novels, television series and films will be used. We'll also cover the main trick in creating anti-heroes: they always possess an underlying pathos.
World Building On The Run

Whether you write contemporary, historical, paranormal, or science fiction - a great story is always rooted in great world building. No offense to any of my writing friends, but I seem to write everywhere EXCEPT my home office! Using a tri-fold poster board or large dry erase board for my world building simply won't work. After I discuss some world building fundamentals, I'll give you some tips and tricks on how to design / create portable world building materials. Once your book is published, don't let your world building sit on a shelf! Reuse it to help with your marketing and promotions to sell more books! As an added bonus, I'll be giving away three world building journal starter kits.
Presented by Melissa McClone

Learn the writing techniques and tricks a multi-published author has gathered over the years. Some tools were taught to her by critique partners at different stages of her career. Others she learned writing and selling over thirty-one manuscripts. The sub-title for this workshop could be How to Be A Better Writer and Critique Partner. There's no better way to learn than by doing which is why critiquing can help you be a stronger writer. Hint: you will be critiquing during the workshop! There will be examples and hands-on exercises to put the techniques into action so you can take your writing to the next level.
When 50 writers and 6 editors and agents try to make a connection. Lynda Aicher brought her board from last year, and shared that much of it had come to fruition. Can't wait to see what happens next year with these boards!
They are looking for ways to stay relevant, including new electronic publishing divisions. The bigger the publisher, the more bureaucracy, the harder it is for them to be flexible.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Where there is change, there is opportunity. An author’s ability to choose how to be published has given authors more power in the business.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Discoverability should be the biggest concern to all authors. You are up against daunting competition. Promote yourself.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Traditional publishing offered you and advance, and they took care of the expenses of publishing the book. We are different people when the clothes come off. What changes when you are stripped down to basics?
• Have a plan with your love scene. What are you digging for in that love scene – kinky, steamy, rough, soft, emotional, make-up…what?
• Do a sexual arc for your characters. This is reflected in love scenes. Who are they and how do they relate to their partner.
• Be original. Don’t worry about writing the perfect love scene. They don’t always need a bed, to be completely naked.
• Use the language the character would use. Just because they are having sex, doesn’t mean they have a different background
• The end result is not the climax itself, but what the reader takes away from the scene once the climax is over.

When a love scene is written really well, you learn something about the characters. In a love scene you should be exchanging something unexpected between the characters. Some kind of revelation. Doesn’t have to be huge, something a reader would miss if they skim the scene.

Dialogue in a sex scene has one person – to express mutual desire and affection. Talk, look, be dirty. Humor is always helpful, makes things pop.

Less is sometimes more, especially when it comes to dialogue in a love sceen. You Tarzan, me Jane applies. Centers on looks, desires, feelings.

Erotic Inspirations – erotic photography (these images are from Duclerck free erotic magazine)

Love scenes should be a 3some not a 2some the writer should be that involved
We all had fun with it, especially the assignments.

We started with ennegrams. I love using them when creating characters. I have an abbreviated method for character charts I call point-and-click characterization -- ennegrams, archetypes, astrology and sex. What more do you need?

Learning the ennegrams of our chaptermates had everyone laughing. Guess who is a one? You know, the perfectionist? Why, that's our Jessie who organized the whole weekend.

Knowing our ennegram type helps us learn our default personality type for characters, and what to look for when comments on our story come back saying our heroine is acting out of character - it's probably when she's reacting as we would, not as she would.

Next, we moved on to character traits. We saw how using unexpected traits made for more rounded characters. Mary taught us not to write default characterization, more dimensional characters are what editors are looking for when they say they want the same, but different.

Character traits for career choices

COP -- controlling, helper, jaded, dominant, observant
FACTORY WORKER -- exacting, reliable, disenchanted
EXOTIC DANCER -- exhibitionist, confident, resourceful

What if they are spun around, and we change the assumed gender of the character?
female COP -- exhibitionist, confident, resourceful

female FACTORY WORKER -- controlling, helper, jaded, dominant, observant

male EXOTIC DANCER -- exacting, reliable, disenchanted

TOTALLY different characters come to mind, and they are much more interesting than before.

To explore character traits, we wrote five character traits of our hero or heroine...these were collected and doled out. We took the traits provided and then expanded on them. And then we passed it to the left and did it again. This really opened up personalities.

Here's mine

busy > hyperactive > high achiever

responsibile > stodgy > reliable

determined > stubborn > persistent

adventurous > reckless > curious

charming > manipulative > self-assured

Not every suggestion works, but it does help brighten the picture of your character.

After lunch, the conversation turned from characters to plot structure. As a proud non-plotter, I mainly listened. One thing I was able to see yesterday was that I naturally work in scene and structure. I didn't understand it twenty-four hours ago, but was able to find the elements easily in the story I'd brought to analyze.

We worked through goals and turning points, fears and black moments. Nancy CB was ultra brave and offered up her story for examples. I suppose she can say it was all the gypsy fortune tellers fault :)

The best part of the whole weekend was getting to reconnect with chapter-mates. We really do have a special group. I can't wait to do it again!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05880106055269169399noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8141896152701041164.post-91331772230059119122011-09-17T20:59:00.000-07:002011-09-17T20:59:24.259-07:00Break Into Fiction Workshop

Opening Hooks :: What makes this book break out and intrigue readers? Readers resonate to different hooks. The more hooks you incorporate, the more likely you are to draw a reader in. Action, surprise, raising a question, introducing a new element.

Use hooks in the opening sentence, end of opening paragraph, end of first page, end of third page, end of 3rd chapter, opening a chapter, beginning of every scene, final sentence (when writing a series).

An editor/agent tends to read the first 3 pages and if they like it, they’ll flip to the synopsis to make sure your story is solid. If they like that, they’ll read the 3 chapters.

If you are targeting an agent, editor, line, read books by newer authors to see what hooks work for them.

SCENE ANALYSIS

SCENES are units of action and emotion that stamp indelibly upon one’s awareness. A scene as a unit of conflict, of struggle, lived through by the character and the reader. Multiple points of view dilutes the emotion of the character.

Thank ACTION. The sequel, which is also an element of pacing, is the REACTION

3 functions of a scene

• Move your character toward their goal or show how the goal has changed

• Bring the character into greater conflict

• Strengthens or changes motivation

We spend our whole lives trying to tone down conflict – make the kids and the husband and boss are all happy. If you do that in a novel, nothing is going to happen. To avoid that, you work with scenes, conflict on the page. If your scene is not functioning, it is not working hard enough.

Dwight Swain’s Scene Advice :: Establish a goal that is clear for the character and thus for the reader. Each scene begins with a goal, then comes conflict.

Conflict is what creates the tension on the pages. Great conflict happens when the stakes are high, when the forces of opposition are equal.

When goal meets conflict what must happen next is a DISASTER or COMPLICATION. The STORY QUESTION

SEQUELS : Sequels are the reaction to the preceding scene. They create breathing space.

3 parts of a sequel

• Reaction

• dilemma

• decision

Clarify motivation for your character, and thus for your reader. Sequel clarifies the motivation for the reader.

SETTING

Use settings to make your sentences do more than one thing. Relate your character to the setting. It can be more than just the description of a place.

Use setting ::
• to share backstory

• in an action sequence

• as a segue in a scene

• to show characterization

• to impact pacing

Don't tell if a character is witty or sassy, let the writing show that.

Focus on the story, not on why you are qualified to write it

Keep it short, all of the editors requested a story but said the query for it was too long

Bring your voice to the query

Tell why you chose to submit to this editor/agent, show that you'vedone your research

A hook at the beginning is good, but keep it short.

Don't highlight too much tragedy or chiche

Avoid being repetitive

Shorter is better

Proofread! Typos are careless.

Keep it to the HOOK the BOOK and the COOK. 3 paragraphs, in and out. Never more than 5 lines per paragraph.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05880106055269169399noreply@blogger.com0
