NaNo Virgin

For the first time in my writing career, I'm a National Novel Writing Month entrant. Yes I have joined the hundreds of thousands who every November try to write a novel in thirty days. Many
NaNo attempts fall by the wayside, but many "Win" as well, by making it to the 50,000 word goal by November 30th. Many of the "winners" never see the light of publishing day, but some do. Her Cinderella Complex by our own Jenna Bayley-Burke started out as a NaNo winner.

The whole purpose of NaNo is to, as NYT best selling author Cherry Adair would say, "Just write the d!@# book!"

So I am going to write the book. In book 3 of my Scorpion Moon Trilogy, Until the End of Time. The actions of the hero from Book 1, my debut novel, Widow's Peak, come back to haunt him. Here's a sneak peak at things to come:

Avice climbed the stairs to answer the knock at the door of the only place she’d known as home since she’d come to England. In this busy market town Damien had allowed her to make a home. Though they lived on the ground floor of the tower, he had made it into a palace almost matching the grandeur of the King’s suite, three stories above.

She liked their rooms better than the King’s suite. The space at the base of the tower was much bigger than the room at the top of the stairs. They could have an anteroom, where the King had only a bed chamber.

She pulled back the bolt and opened the door, but what she saw was wrong.

Nothing could have prepared her for what she saw.

Nothing would have made her ready to see Damian cradled in the arms of his best friend. It should have been the other way around.

Nothing would have prepared her for the red staining his tunic. She had just brought it from the laundress this morning.

Nothing should have kept her from crumpling to the floor in anguish. This should never have happened. He was…too good.

But she was prepared. Damian had told her a thousand times exactly what to do should this moment ever occur. And she would follow his commands to the letter.

Without a word she stepped aside and he carried Damien’s body down the stairs.

Damien’s friend—Damien’s student—Damien’s finest student followed her to the bed chamber. Set his body on their bed. The bed they had shared with Damien for five years. The bed where, tonight, she had planned to tell him.

He had accused her of getting fat. She had always been slender. He liked her that way. Tonight she would have said, “I am not getting fat Damien, I am getting ready to welcome your son.” She had hoped it would give him reason to consider retiring. He had money enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life. The masters had seen to that.

He stood back looking as if he had lost his way, swaying to and fro as though might fall dead as well. This thief who had stolen her life.

He handed her the key, the key Damian always wore around his neck, and she noticed the blood oozing from his arm.

She clutched the key tightly in her hand, wishing she could plunge it into his heart like he had plunged the knife into her beloved.

Could she kill him? Probably not. Damian had trained him. And if he was good enough to kill Damian, he could easily kill her, even in his current condition.

She placed the key in the wooden box atop the ornately carved cupboard standing next to the bed. Damien had had it sent over from outremer just because she said she missed the one she had in her old room. There was probably not another like it in all of England.

She pulled a roll of thinly stripped linen from the cupboard. Led the thief to the anteroom table. Poured the cup of whiskey she would have served to Damien.

He drank and she poured another, then unable to stand his presence any longer, she picked up the bowl and went to the cistern for water.

The faint scent of roses filled her nose as she crossed the yard, but the promise of their full bloom smelled salty, like the blood of her beloved that somewhere stained the ground. She faltered, nearly broke and cried as her reflection glared back at her in the moonlit pool.

Not yet. She must get through this. Everything now depended on her. Her ability to survive, the life of her child, the lives of a hundred men, all depended on her.

One despondent, forlorn spy.

I better get back to writing or I'll never get done by the 30th.

The Price of Promotion

Working on: ...I keep using my write time to look for houses
Waiting on: word on the uber-classic romance I gave my ultra-modern editor (insert nail biting here)
Mood: exhausted and praying the house I want has a clean mold test!

Writing is a solitary job. When writers do go out into the world, it's usually to mix with other authors who won't call the loony bin when you talk about your hidden werewolf baby (thanks Lynn) or call the cops when you say you need a way to kill someone with a knife and not let it get too bloody (thanks Connie).

But sitting at home with your laptop doesn't sell books. (DARN!) Sometimes you can get by with ads and word of mouth, sometimes you have to be more active and haunt readers on blogs, forums, yahoo groups, myspace, twitter, facebook...

You can promo to the point where writing takes a back seat. No one is happy when that goes down. It's important to find a balance between flashing your book and letting it fade away. If anyone figures it out let me know. In the meantime, here's the top 10 list of free promo I use whenever I have a new release.

1. Yahoo groups
2. Getting your friends to blog your book (thanks, Romance Divas!!)
3. Contest / giveaways
4. Book reviews -- these trickle in slowly but they always make my day
5. Author interviews
6. Free Reads -- nothing is better than the Romance Divas ebook challenge
7. Online chats -- these are so hit or miss, though the CoffeeTime Romance one I did had great people.
8. Reader groups (Manic Readers, The Romance Studio)
9. Forums
10. Guest blogging

Dancing With Trends

Writing is a labor of love. It can be lots of fun, but it is also loads of work. Your heart must be in it, or it really shows in the writing. However, as authors we need to sell what we write, and to do that we must create a story our publisher reads and sees great sales numbers adding up. Often, that means a book that takes advantage of what is hot in the market.

Unfortunately, writing to market is a double edged sword. By the time your book is finished, the market migt be saturated with the type of story you've created. With this uncertain economy, romance is one of the genres expected to stay strong. There are rumors inspirational and historical will be the next romance market boom. Why? Faith that the world will improve, and pure escapism.

The biggest 'trend' in romance novels seems to be ebooks. Not just ebook publishers putting out more stories, but traditional publishers making the ebook transition. While audio book sales are dipping, and adult mass market is flatlining, ebooks are on the rise. Oprah and Martha Stewart's on air praise of the Kindle can't hurt. Neither can the new focus on living a less cluttered life. You can compress an entire bookshelf onto a flash drive. No one can see your book addiction. Not that I'd know ANYTHING about that.

One of my publishers puts novels out in ebook form first, so I'm covered on the ebook front. As to the subgenre trends, I can't write to either of them. I'm holding on that Dear Authors' Save The Contemporary campaign generates sales for what I write. It all comes back around. :)

Thoroughly Compromised!

Compromising Positions by Jenna Bayley-Burke

Falling in love is the last thing on his busy agenda…but compromising positions can lead just about anywhere.

David Strong knows how to do a lot of things—run an international fitness company, finesse stock portfolios and stay out of emotional entanglements. That is, until he gets tangled up with Sophie Delfino and her Sensational Sex workout. He’s supposed to help her demonstrate Kama Sutra positions for her couples’ yoga class. The rigorous postures require more than just physical control. And his co-instructor unexpectedly tests his control to the limit.

Sophie’s been fantasizing about David since her teens, but she never dreamed she’d actually be expected to run through her intimate desires—with an audience! The class is very professional, tame even—or it would be, if she’d been in any of the positions before. But she hasn’t—except in her wildest fantasies about David. Sophie knows she wants David in every way, and she’s flexible enough to use whatever she has to get him.

David can’t afford any unexpected distractions. Besides the sensual positions he has to endure without embarrassing himself in public, there’s an embezzler stealing from his company. And then there’s Sophie—who is well on her way to stealing his well-guarded heart.

Warning: This is one exercise program you won’t need to consult your doctor before beginning…unless he’s hot and available for house calls. The Kama Sutra isn’t for the prudish or faint of heart, and neither is this story.

Celebrate Romance - Stress buster

Posted by: Jenna Bayley-Burke
Currently working on: a new chapter 3 for the category partial, polishing the ST
Waiting on: inspiration on chapter 3... more than ten minutes to write
Mood: frustrated, tired
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
This month we're supposed to talk about writing stress...but I'm too stressed to do that. Instead, I brought pictures from the recent Celebrate Romance conference, held right here in Portland.

Usually, conferences have stressers of their own - editors and agents abound, so you must be on your best behavior. I don't really have best behavior, so I wind up with bruised ribs from writer friends jabbing me when I run at the mouth...but Celebrate Romance is about readers, not industry, so...my mouth never closed! And I only got jabbed twice. A new record!

Because everyone there LOVED romance, we all seemed to bond over our need for a happy ending. Plus we got to have fan-girl moments -- likethis one here with RCRW Membership Goddess Jessie Smith and the fantastic Rosemary Laurey.

Jessie wasn't completely off duty. She managed to talk Meljean Brook into joining RCRW! Welcome to the group, Meljean!

RCRW Programming Priestess Delle Jacobs enjoyed the event too...except my incessant chatter may have given her a headache. She's too polite to blame. But not too polite to swipe the last piece of chocolate :)

I was excited that Delilah Marvelle was giving her wokshop on the history of sex again...I missed when she did it for RCRW because I was baby crazy. I even took notes!

Celebrate Romance was also a great chance for the authors to catch up. We see one another at signings and conferences, but this was much more relaxed. Lacey Danes came down from Washington for the event. You know, I think RCRW might have to adopt her.

She'll come to Portland whenever we ask :)

Agent Schmagent

Posted by: Jenna Bayley-Burke

Currently working on: revisions on the category partial, polishing the ST

Waiting on: inspiration to start the category over...again, and edits on the erotica novella

Mood: frustrated, spacey
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

This month we're talking about literary agents - why you'd need one and why you'd want one and how to find one. An agent should come with knowledge and relationships with editors at the publishing houses you're targeting. They can tweak contracts, finagle publicity, and help you polish a manuscript until it sells. You can find them all over, from web searches to conferences to writers guidebooks. Finding an agent who believes in your work is hard enough; finding an agent who meets your own set of wants and needs is even harder.

Agent Query is a great place to start your agent search. But simply querying agents who are aquiring what you write isn't enough. You need to research every agency you submit to. Who do they represent, how often do they make sales (check Publlishers Weekly) and how long have their clients been with them.

Whenever possible, talk with authors currently with the agent you're considering. And talk to them off the record. How do you know who's with whom? Publisher's Weekly, the agents website (or blog), asking around, and the deditcation page of the authors books.

Personally, I'll never sign with an agent I haven't met in person. It's expensive to make it to conferences, but invaluable when it comes to making an agent match. Just because someone requests your work doesn't mean you'll work well together long term. Your best idea of that comes from instict, and mine work better in person.

Do you need an agent? Probably. It depends on what you write, where you want your career to go. For ebooks and category romance, they don't have a lot of room to groove. With bigger contracts, an agent can be worth their weight in platinum.

Thursday 13 :: Things That Make Me Go Hmmm...

JENNA BAYLEY-BURKE
Currently: I'm trying to work while the baby does the Jumperoo...and hoping the boys don't notice Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is on...and STILL reworking the partial of the lawyers book...
Mood: Hopeful the new year will bring good things
--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~

  1. Celebutants. Why?

  2. The economy. We need to get 30 mom's who saved all year to get the kids a Wii for the holidays in a room with these CEO's and explain budgeting to them.

  3. Tanning beds. Just spray tan, people. It's not worth the risk to 'earn' your tan. Buy it like the celbrities do

  4. Annoying phrases. "I personally..." think you should stop being redundant. "With all due respect" means you're about to be rude.

  5. Why people sign up for reality television. They know they have to eat bugs. It's on every freaking show. Why feign surprise?

  6. What happened to the B Drive on our computers? Don't you wonder what's in it? Probably cookies.

  7. Has anyone ever seen the alphabet song and twinkle twinkle little star in a room at the same time? I think not!

  8. Pirates. Only sexy in fiction.

  9. Slept like a baby. Let me tell you folks...babies don't sleep much!

  10. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube...I have social networking exhaustion. I can't do it anymore.

  11. Hugh Grant. Benicio del Torro. There are some 'sexy' men that have the opposite effect on me.

  12. Commando. I'd bet good money every commando is wearing underpants right now.

  13. The End. When you read, it's the end. When you write, it means it's time to edit. And revise. And rework. Then flesh out.....yeah....

Jenna is celebrating the holidays with a sweet holiday story, free to her readers! It's all about what happens when love comes knocking at your door. Check out Jenna’s website, or blog.

Fooling Myself

Currently: I'm wiping noses...and reworking the partial of the lawyers book...and finishing up the erotica story...and eating too much Halloween candy...
Mood: Snarkilicious...boogers have that effect on me
--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~

This month we're s'posed to be rambling about how we keep our butt in the chair. If you've seen my butt lately, you know it's roughly the shape of a recliner, so that's not a problem for me. Actually working, now see...that's an issue.

As soon as I turn on my computer, I think I have a few moments to do something while it boots up. So I'll read a bit in whatever book is next to me. This probably loses me about 3 minutes since the computer is always ready before I am at a bookmark worthly place in the book.

Email beckons, and I must say it's the worlds best time waster, masked as a productivity device. After all, I passed notes with a bookseller and a conference organizer this morning...plus my editor, CP, brother-in-law, his girlfriend, my neighbor...and there was a wicked sale on at Gymboree...

Eventually I might actually open up the story I promised myself would be finished before NaNoWriMo started. But it seems teh story fairies have left it at the same stuck place it was at when I closed it at midnight last night...hmmm. Spider Solitaire anyone?

Of course as soon as I win a game, giving me the confidence I need to push my characters into the hotel...the baby wakes up. Or the school bus arrives. Or my mother calls. Not to mention the full sized dust bunnies that are talking about unionizing in my hallway...

And then there is art class and grocery shopping and babysitting the neighbor boy...by then there is dinner and a husband who might be worth talking to...

By the end of the day I am so disgusted with my productivity I do what I should have done at 8 am...I slide the wireless function off on the computer and write a load of crap. Which actually worked into a great scene and with a creative scene break managed to almost finish the story. Finally...maybe if I actually manage to start working tomorrow...

A Day in the Life of Jenna...

Currently: I'm working on the partial of my lawyers book...revising my road trip book...and wondering why I volunteered to judge so many contests...

Mood: Hopeful...good news is coming my way, I can feel it.
--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~

Unfortunately my husband is not telepathic, so he turns off the alarm and gets up at an ungodly hour. At this point I have two choices – close my eyes and give in to the pull of sleep, or be a good girl and get in the shower. Sleep is what I want to do, but I take the shower because I don't want to embarass my kiddos at drop-off for school.

When I emerge from the relaxing steam of the shower, I try to coax my curly hair into compliance and hope for ten minutes to check my email. No such luck. Hubba Bubba is there with one fussy little girl. I shower before he leaves for work for just this reason, half the time the baby wakes up while I'm otherwise engaged. He escaped to the relative sanity of work, and after I feed the baby I enter the inner realm of small boys, at my own risk.

My youngest is a morning person, the oldest? Not even close. After I wrestle them into some clothes (quite the feat with a wiggly girl on one arm), I bribe them downstairs with the promise of chocolate. Hey, chocolate zucchini muffins are healthy...kinda.

By ten-til-eight they are in the people mover, and we're making our way to the elementary school. This is the first year both boys have school every day. Sometimes I can drop them off, but today I have to chat up the teachers about Halloween party plans. With the baby I can't do weekly volunteering, so I'm the self-imposed party parent.

After we escape the school, the baby girl and I make a quick trip to the grocery. Hubba Bubba is out of coffee creamer, big boy is low on cheese, and I'm working today which means I'd love a 100-calorie pack of Chessmen cookies. We race home and she goes right down for her morning nap. The heavens are singing as I fire up the computer and...write three blog posts, put out a fire in a yahoo group, and answer email.

I wake up the baby so we can wait for the kindergarten school bus. the small boy is always excited to see us, and comes home with a lunch plan...scrambled eggs and toast. Once lunch is done I try and settle the baby into a nap and the small boy into some semblance of quiet so I can get some work done. Naps are over and the big boy arrives home from school before I get any actual work done (yahoo issues part deux, judging contest entries, and an IM brainstorming session that might have been productive it had been about my book). I vow no distractions tonight while I work. Egad. Survivor is on. I’ll have to be strong.

The afternoon is a walk to the park with the kids and a chance to sit on a bench with the hot historical I picked up at the last RCRW signing. But I don’t read it – other moms are there so I opt for adult conversation. After two warnings and a time out, we head home. I politely suggest the boys play in the backyard while I make dinner. BigBoy not so politely declines, until BabyBoy finds a slug.

I add slug bait to the grocery list and grill salmon to top our Caesar salads for dinner. After dinner we take a walk as a family, and the knot of a problem in my story finally yanks free! Unfortunately it involved losing about 8 pages...

Back at home I attack my computer, one eye at the clock in the corner, mocking me that Survivor starts too soon. I rewritten 2 pages before I give in and flip on the TV, swearing I will work through the show.

Survivor is over and it’s bath time. Hubba earns his place in my heart every night by handing the bath and bulk of the boys nighttime routine. I’ve worked out 4 pages before my exceptional story reading, prayer, and hugging skills are requested. Once the boys are tucked in, I have the girl to myself. We cuddle for about an hour before she drifts off.

Once I lay her dow I work in earnest, trying like heck to finish the chapter so I can ship it off to my CP and concentrate on the revisions the editor requested on another book.

My husband tried to speak to me around eleven, but gave up when I merely nod and stare at the computer. I work on a laptop on our bed, so he’s forced to pull the covers over his head and try to sleep while I wrestle with my chapter break.

I finished. Just before midnight. I email the revised story to my gmail account as backup and power down. Because I work so close to the time I need to sleep, I brush my teeth and meditate before attempting it, But by then, it’s tomorrow. Another day in the life, and you only asked for one.

Is Darcy Here?

JENNA BAYLEY-BURKE

Currently: Keeping busy with the baby so as not to think about what we'll get to FIRST IMPRESSIONS in due time means in editor speak and getting ideas for a new book. So far I have lawyer jokes, wedding cakes, half a synopsis, Becki Newton and Simon Baker.

Mood: Sadly, still daydreaming of sleep...
--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~

The hotel ballroom was sectioned off into the haves and have nots. Those with editor or agent appointments, and those waiting to pick up the scraps left by writers who failed to show up. The haves showed up twenty minutes before their appointment and stood in one line and then another. The have nots waited on chairs, swarming towards a volunteer who dared approach the hungry mob with news of who had an open seat across the table.

You can imagine the tension buzzing in the room as I waited for my appointment with an editor (for a now defunct line, but that's not the point). I was so relieved to see a local chaptermate. She'd spent the better part of the day in the room, scoring more appointments than my nervous stomach could handle.

She's just began to tell me of her latest chat with an agent whose mere name made my palms sweat when she screamed and jumped at least a foot in the air!

When she landed I looked swiftly for cameras (not a Punked or Candid Camera crew member in sight). As I was scanning the room I noticed where she was pointing...to the floor. There stood proud a cockroach half the size of her shoe!

Oregon is thankfully cockroach deprived, so I nearly let out a yelp of my own. Only every eye in the room staring at the girl who screached kept my own mouth closed. One of the hotel staff sauntered in (surely, a scream qualifies as something you need to run for, but obviously this guy never worked at Les Schwab ). He asked what the problem was and my still breathless friend pointed at the vermin.

"Oh, well, that must have come in one of the boxes of books."

Sure it did. Because there wasn't a book in the room and something that size would have gone unnoticed. Uh-huh.

All I could think to say was, "Could you step on it?"

Hotel service with a crunch. My friend made a bee line out of the room, probably to shower from the experience. I had to pretend all the way through my appointment that I wasn't thinking about roaches!

Jenna's Going Surfing...

Currently: Keeping busy with the baby so as not to think about how I haven't heard from my editor about FIRST IMPRESSIONS and getting ideas for a new book. So far I have lawyer jokes, wedding cakes, and Dierks Bentley
Mood: Still daydreaming of sleep...
--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~

Writing a book isn't rocket science. Truly, nothing will explode no matter how you mix things up. Since RCRW is look at favorite research websites this month, I think it's time I showed y'all a few of my infamous writing shortcuts.

Point-And-Click Characterisation :: using the internet to create people

The internet is a wealth of information on how to write. So much, that you can read it all and never write anything! Make your websurfing time work for you, instead of against you.

Google :: The Google image search is the perfect way to get an idea of just what your characters look like. Meet Xavier, the hero of the book I should be revising as I type this, Driven to Distraction.

Monster :: Your characters have jobs, right? Look up their occupation on Monster for job descriptions, salary guidelines, and educational qualifications.

The Colors of Sex :: I get to write steamy, so I think it is good to know how my characters would act BEFORE I have them acting. Xavier is RED: People who like red tend to be tigers in the sack. They are easily aroused and enjoy sex in every way imaginable. Once the sexual spark is ignited, it may take hours to extinguish. When two reds get together, the ensuing erotica could make Lady Chatterly blush. Lovers of red tend to be aggressors and weaker colors should be aware.

Hero Archetypes :: This is a great site for heroes & heroines. It helps solidify their character in your mind. Xavier is a CHARMER: fun, irresistible, unreliable, creates a party, smooth operator, playboy, rogue. Leo Dicaprio. (why does Leo keep coming up? Seriously...here, astrology, ennegrams...I need to embrace Xavier's inner Leo!)

Emotional Baggage or Internal Forces Keep Lovers Apart :: Inkalicious has great cheat sheets. This is good for making sure you have a handle on your characters' internal conflict.

Enneagrams :: A lot of writers swear by ennegrams. Xavier is Type Seven: The Enthusiast. However, I use these mainly for motivation. Knowing that sevens "want to maintain their freedom and happiness, to avoid missing out on worthwhile experiences, to keep themselves excited and occupied, to avoid and discharge pain" helps me keep perspective.

After I gather this information online, I turn to two books I can't create characters without. A simple Astrology book. These are great for basic character traits. Grab one on any bookstore clearance table, they are everywhere. Then, there is a modern relationship Astrology book I adore -- He's Just Not In The Stars. It goes deeper into the nuances of each sign, and therefore, deeper into character description.

See how much work you just got done! Congratulations, you deserve a cookie and a chapter in that novel you're reading. Don't let anything scare you. We're all doing this because it is great fun, no matter how frustrated you get along the way!

XOXOXO -- Jenna
